About Dr. Perricone
Nicholas Perricone, MD, FACN, is a board certified clinical and research dermatologist. A brilliant scholar, Dr. Perricone completed medical school in just 3 years, graduating with distinction. He is regarded as the Father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging. He is the author of the two New York Times # 1 Best Sellers, The Perricone Prescription™, A Physician’s 28 Day Program for Total Body and Face Rejuvenation and The Wrinkle Cure. Dr. Perricone has won several awards for his outstanding contributions, and holds numerous patents for his breakthrough skin treatments.
The Perricone Promise
One of the most simple concepts in The Perricone Promise is the idea that inflammation causes aging. To prevent or slow down aging, one must prevent or slow down inflammation. Food and substances that cause inflammation will inevitably cause aging and the break down of the immune system. Dr. Perricone reveals foods, supplements, herbs and topical products that will fight inflammation as well as substances that cause inflammation.
If you look at the book in this light, the concepts are very simple and easy to grasp. Make no mistake, Dr. Perricone backs up all his claims with scientific evidence and explanations. He explains the science behind amino acids called neuropeptides and the incredible results that can be achieved by regulating and controlling these chemicals in the body. I have to admit that the scientific explanations lost me (even bored me) at times, however the core principles I found to be extremely valuable and make The Perricone Promise a book I would not do without!
The Perricone Promise includes a list of 10 Super Foods which everyone should include in their diet. I found that some of these foods were already included in my diet, while others I had never even heard about. The list also revealed some amazing benefits of everyday foods can be easily included in one's diet.
For example, one of the 10 superfoods he mentions is "Nuts and Seeds":

The results showed that even in this healthy-living, largely vegetarian group, those who ate nuts at least five times per week cut their risk of dying from coronary heart disease (CHD) by 48 percent, compared with those who ate nuts less than once weekly. Imagine that including something as simple as nuts in your daily diet can dramatically reduce your risk of having a heart attack. This is only one of the many examples of foods that can help one stay young longer and live a healthy life.
In addition to foods, Dr. Perricone also covers several herbs (to be used liberally) and supplements that we should all include in our daily diet. He also stresses the importance of buying organic fresh foods and supplements which have had minimal or no exposure to harmful toxins, chemicals and steroids.
Some may find the very detailed 28-day program a bit difficult to stick to completely, however I don't think that the purpose of this program is to give people a strict diet regime that they have to stick to like glue. I view the 28-day program as a guide to helping one develop a lifestyle change (especially in one's eating habits) that will be of benefit not only for 28 days, but for the rest of one's life.

I have to admit that I was anxious to read about the topical creams and treatments that Dr. Perricone recommends. I think it is human nature to always look for the easiest and quickest solution to any problem. After a bit of research on these products however, I found that most of these solutions will be quite difficult for the average person to afford.
Nevertheless, the major focus of the book and the science behind the book, is that beauty begins on the inside. Ultimately, the rate at which we age, the strength of our immune systems, our energy levels, and our overall health, is largely dependent upon what we eat. There is no getting around that!
Of course, stress is another factor that largely contributes to premature aging and an overall decline in one's health. Unfortunately though, stress is not always something that we can control. We can however, take control of what we eat.
